Bob and I were in Williamsburg a couple weeks ago craving the warmer weather and had a lovely time just carrying our jackets and not wearing them. FIRST MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

Since it is so close to Mother’s Day, I thought I would blog a little about the very “first” Mother’s Day; how it originated, as well as my very own “first” Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day started many years ago as a religions event when the Greeks honored Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. After the Greeks, England in the 1600s honored Mary the Mother of Christ. Later in England there was a religion order to include all mothers which became know as “Mothering Sunday.” Just to show how important Mothering Sunday was, times were poor back then and servants lived with their employers. But for this special day, Mothering Sunday, servants were encouraged to go home for the day and be with their mother. A “Mothering Cake” was a special dessert for that day.
As Christianity grew in Europe, a day called “Mothering Church” came into being. This was a different day when they honored the church as (like a mother) it gave the people life and protection. Later the two days were blended together.
When the Colonists settled in America, this great tradition – “Mothering Sunday” stopped because of lack of time. Julia Ward Howe, a social activist in the U.S. started promoting “Mother’s Day for Peace” in the year of 1872, honoring peace, motherhood & womanhood. This celebration did not last long, but Julia Ward Howe is still recognized as the women whose celebrations were the precursor to our Mother’s Day celebrations.
Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis was another leader who worked on forming women’s groups during the Civil War time. The groups were formed to help educate women about sanitation and the basics of nursing.
Anna Jarvis – Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis daughter, was the person who was really instrumental in starting Mother’s Day as we celebrate it today. Anna was a spinster who took care of her ailing mother. Her mother died in 1905 and was greatly missed by Anna. In 1907 Anna dedicated her life to her mother’s cause to establish Mother’s Day to honor mothers living and dead and hoped to increase respect for parents and form stronger family bonds. Because of Anna Jarvis efforts, the first Mother’s Day was observed on May 10th, 1908 in Grafton, WV, honoring Mrs. Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis and all mothers thereafter. Graften, WV, is the home now of the International Mother’s Day Shrine.
In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared the first official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day as a national holiday to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May. It is a day when we acknowledge our mothers contributions in our lives and we honor her with flowers and gifts.
I remember my own “first” Mother’s Day as a very large highlight in my life. I couldn’t have been happier being a mother of a 9 month baby, and again having another one on the way. This was the icing on the cake for me. The money wasn’t plentiful, as it never is with young couples, but we learned a lot during those years.
As I did research for this blog, I am delighted to see that Mother’s Day didn’t come about from a card company, and it derived many years before cards were ever given thought. Our mothers should be honored and have a day of their own. They work very hard and they are the glue that keeps the family together.
Adoring Threads.com offers many personalized gifts that a mother would be thankful to receive. From handkerchiefs to spa wraps – personalizing them with a desired embroidered design or initials would make a mother feel very special, just because of the thought you placed into your gift in thinking of her.
Maybe you have your own thought about Mother’s Day. My blog is always open for any comments you would like to offer and I would love to hear from you.

FIRST TIME EXPERIENCES IN LIFE’S JOURNEY
Life is a journey that gives you never-ending experiences, and whether they are good or bad, we are all on a certain path. On my own journey, besides being married and having a family… which was always first and foremost in my life, I have always dreamed of having a small business. I am very excited as I reach out to this new adventure, going over the cleft as to say, but keeping my feet on the ground. Even though this is one of my “firsts,“ it has taken a great deal of planning, and then again some more planning.
It is just mind boggling to think that in life our “first times” are never ending. I’m saying this because this is my first blog, so please bear with me as I blog about some of my “firsts” especially those pertaining to Adoring Threads.
Combining my obsession with the needle and thread, and my many hours spent looking for that special gift for that special someone; it just made sense for me to create my Adoring Threads.
I have so many firsts with Adoring Threads, and I will be blogging about them throughout the weeks. From the choice of what type embroidery machine to purchase and my first embroidery project - to the selection of what products to present on my website for thank you gifts, baby gifts, shower gifts and more, I can sincerely blog a lot. Please join me as I take this new journey. I’m sure the path may get rocky at times, but I do have my hiking shoes on and I’m ready to accept the challenge.
My blog is always open for any comments you would like to offer and I would love to hear from you.
